Children and adolescents may struggle, act out or shut down completely when trying to emotionally process divorce, separation, life transitions, the many challenges of adolescence, self-esteem struggles, anxieties, traumatic events, grief or loss. At times they may feel confused, angry, guilty, frightened, depressed, shameful, vulnerable, insecure and overwhelmed. Often, it is difficult for them to express themselves to a parent or loved one. As individuals, I believe we all have the innate ability to heal and to grow, and sometimes just need a safe space and extra support as we reflect and process where we're at. I support children, adolescents and families who are struggling with these changes and who may also be experiencing other emotional or behavioral responses to the unexpected challenges of life. It takes courage to change and strength to keep moving forward through life's transitions. 

The first step in seeking a counselor for your child or adolescent can be the most difficult, but also the most supportive thing you can do for them during a time of change. My aim is to support and help your child find the tools that work best for them as they identify their sense of self, discover their own personal coping skills and learn new ways to express their emotions in a safe and healthy way. Using a holistic approach, I work collaboratively with your child, adolescent and family as we look at the relationships between emotions, thoughts, behaviors, and life events.  My style is supportive, interactive, compassionate and warm, with a splash of humor.

Integrating the well-being of the mind & body connection has been shown to be healing and restorative.  When appropriate and useful, I often integrate creative therapy techniques such as: expressive arts therapy, play therapy, Yoga Calm®, mindfulness, and sand tray therapy within the therapeutic process to help oneself open up in ways that allow freedom of expression. This can help facilitate an inner awareness of personal strengths, insight and support. It also enables self-expression throughout the process of discovering new ways to overcome one's own struggles.

about me

I received my Masters Degree in Counseling Psychology from Lewis and Clark Graduate School. I specialized in children, adolescents and adults using a variety of individual and group counseling modalities. My experience has been working with children, adolescents and adults who have witnessed and/or experienced divorce, trauma, grief, loss, anxiety, depression, life transitions, self-esteem and self-worth issues, as well as witnessing and/or experiencing domestic violence and intimate partner violence.

I have also worked with children and teens, in both shelter and residential treatment facilities, who were experiencing serious to severe emotional and behavioral difficulties combined with other needs. In addition, I have supported teenage girls and boys recovering from substance abuse in an outpatient treatment center, as well as adult women in an inpatient chemical dependency treatment residence. 

Yoga Calm groups for children & teens ::

Yoga and counseling can be an effective combination when working with children and teens who may be struggling with anxiety, stress at home or school, anger, ADHD, as well as other behavioral and emotional challenges.  

I use Yoga Calm with individual clients as well as in a group setting. 

The Yoga Calm® curriculum developed by Jim & Lynea Gillen  helps children and teens develop 
social/emotional awareness and skills, communication skills, self-confidence, trust, empathy, 
leadership, as well as fostering physical fitness and character development. 


TRE ® tension & trauma releasing exercises

TRE® (Tension, Stress & Trauma Releasing Exercises) is an innovative series of exercises that assist the body in releasing deep muscular patterns of stress, tension and trauma. Created by Dr. David Berceli, PhD, TRE® safely activates a natural reflex mechanism of shaking or vibrating that releases muscular tension, calming down the nervous system. When this muscular shaking/vibrating mechanism is activated in a safe and controlled environment, the body is encouraged to return back to a state of balance.
