Empathetic Listening vs. Fixing a Problem

October 9, 2012

Although this is a humorous take on the issue, sometimes two people do not meet on the same page, often resulting in long standing repeated arguments.  Fixing a problem, versus being a supportive listener can make a big difference in making that connection with another person.  If you find yourself in this situation, try being clear and upfront with the other person about what you need from them, prior to discussing an issue.  For example: "Can I just vent to you for a minute about my day?"  Versus: "I could really use some input about something, mind if I run it by you?"  Stating for what you need ahead of time can validate what you need, as well as making the other person feel helpful and supportive!
